José Noguero has lived and worked as a visual artist in Berlin since 1999. In sculpture, painting and photography, he questions the relationship between reality and fiction, moving on two stages or through two landscapes simultaneously: one could be described as „objective reality“ and the other is the landscape that shapes our longings, hopes, insecurities and prejudices. Above all, however, he is interested in the peripheral area, the in-between, where the two landscapes meet. What might such a landscape look like? As if our desires and fears were characters in a play, as if they were acting out a drama (or perhaps a comedy?) in which ambiguous reflections, fictitious games and fragmentation take over.

A focus of this view of the real and the fictional is the transience in nature and in our worlds, whether physical, emotional or political. There is an ambivalence between the intoxication of Baroque representations, their appreciation of life as a dream, and the ascetic desire that comes from some Eastern philosophies and aesthetics, which also question the essential and the illusory.

José Noguero studied sculpture and painting in Barcelona and deepened his studies in Amsterdam and Bristol. The desire to learn, as an integral part of his work, led him to Rome, Naples and India, where he studied with a sculptor of Indian stone sculpture. His work thus combines a strong traditional heritage with a contemporary view of the present and the history of art and representation.

His expressive brushstrokes create space in a very constructivist way. Noguero incorporates numerous nature studies into his work, especially groups of clouds, landscapes, rock formations and animals. They enable him to create a structure that he can capture. This is particularly important to him as, coming from sculpture, he has a great need for spatiality and three-dimensionality. He wants to capture the viewer directly through the spatial effect. Layers of color and structure, which repeatedly overlap, lend the pictures depth, so that the landscapes can only be read as such in the broadest sense and increasingly reveal a tendency towards non-objectivity.

Abstract expressionism, Japanese art and Venetian painting are his sources of inspiration. Specifically, the light, color, exuberance and dynamism of Venetian painting, together with abstract expressionism and the need to build and sculpt that emerges from his earlier sculptural work, form the decisive contrast that defines José Noguero‘s work.

José Noguero lebt und arbeitet seit 1999 als bildender Künstler in Berlin. Im Bereich Skulptur, Malerei und Fotografie hinterfragt er das Verhältnis von Realität und Fiktion, wobei er sich auf zwei Bühnen bzw. durch zwei Landschaften gleichzeitig bewegt: die eine könnte man als „objektive Realität“ bezeichnen und die andere ist die Landschaft, die unsere Sehnsüchte, Hoffnungen, Unsicherheiten und Vorurteile prägt. Vor allem aber interessiert ihn der Randbereich, das Zwischen, in dem beide Landschaften aufeinandertreffen. Wie könnte ein solches aussehen? Als wären unsere Wünsche und Ängste Figuren in einem Theaterstück, als spielten sie ein Drama (oder vielleicht auch eine Komödie?) in dem zweideutige Reflexionen, fiktive Spiele und Fragmentierungen überhand nehmen.

Ein Schwerpunkt dieses Blicks auf das Reale und das Fiktive ist die Vergänglichkeit in der Natur und in unseren Welten, ob physisch, emotional oder politisch. Es besteht eine Ambivalenz zwischen dem Rausch der barocken Darstellungen, ihrer Wertschätzung des Lebens als Traum, und dem asketischen Verlangen, das aus einigen östlichen Philosophien und Ästhetiken stammt, die ebenfalls das Wesentliche und das Illusionäre hinterfragen.

José Noguero studierte Bildhauerei und Malerei in Barcelona und vertiefte seine Studien in Amsterdam und Bristol. Der Wunsch zu lernen, als integraler Bestandteil seiner Arbeit, führte ihn nach Rom, Neapel und Indien, wo er bei einem Bildhauer der indischen Steinbildhauerei lernte. Sein Werk verbindet somit ein starkes traditionelles Erbe mit einem zeitgenössischen Blick auf die Gegenwart und die Geschichte der Kunst und der Darstellung.

Seine expressiven Pinselstriche kreieren den Raum auf eine sehr konstruktivistische Weise. Noguero bezieht zahlreiche Naturstudien in sein Werk ein, vor allem Gruppen von Wolken, Landschaften, Felsformationen und Tieren. Sie ermöglichen es ihm, eine Struktur zu schaffen, die er festhalten kann. Dies ist ihm besonders wichtig, da er, von der Bildhauerei kommend, ein großes Bedürfnis nach Räumlichkeit und Dreidimensionalität hat. Er möchte den Betrachter direkt durch die räumliche Wirkung einfangen. Farb- und Strukturschichten, die sich immer wieder überlagern, verleihen den Bildern Tiefe, so dass die Landschaften nur im weitesten Sinne als solche zu lesen sind und zunehmend eine Tendenz zur Gegenstandslosigkeit erkennen lassen.

Der abstrakte Expressionismus, japanische Kunst und venezianische Malerei sind seine Inspirationsquellen. Im Einzelnen bilden Licht, Farbe, Überschwang und Dynamik der venezianischen Malerei zusammen mit dem abstrakten Expressionismus und dem Bedürfnis zu bauen und zu modellieren, das sich aus seinen früheren bildhauerischen Arbeiten ergibt, den entscheidenden Kontrast, den José Nogueros Werk ausmacht.
