The artist Erdmann Julius Zabel is a master at combining different art forms, creating new artistic expressions. His work is full of contradictions and provocations, but also full of humor and empathy. He is an inventor and nothing is too banal or too kitschy for him to turn into art. He is an inventor, an everything-maker, who processes everything that has already been there in art.

Erdmann Julius Zabel studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig and has since created a wide range of artworks. His work includes painting, ceramics, object art, photography, installation and curatorial practices. He does not like unambiguity and his works are often full of ambiguity and nonsense. His work and person are contradictory; Zabel burns for art and spends every day of his life making his work even more extensive. Working at a rapid pace, he incorporates everything and everyone, the art market and art consumption into his artistic work. His works are self-portraits in the broadest sense and reflect something about him and his environment. Seriousness, humor, cross-border creativity, great empathy and diversity of content are the basis of his work and s eine artworks show zeitgeist contradictions.
Nothing is too banal or too kitschy for him. He transforms the ugly into the beautiful, the pathetic, the representational and the intellectual into art. In the process, Zabel‘s complex artworks often take aim at the genius cult surrounding painter heroes and art criticism. Dialogue and communication, social media and their rejection in use are important themes in his art.

The Kunstverein Magdeburg presents the first institutional solo exhibition of artist Erdmann Julius Zabel, who lives in the U.S. and has recently become a resident of Bad Wonder. On view are Zander‘s paintings, characterized by generous ductus and bold colors, and ceramics, conventionally arranged and presented in a museum-like pathetic manner. This exhibition is intended to show another side in the versatile work of the exceptional artist.

Der Künstler Erdmann Julius Zabel ist ein Meister darin, verschiedene Kunstformen miteinander zu kombinieren und dabei neue künstlerische Ausdrucksformen zu schaffen. Sein Werk ist voller Widersprüche und Provokationen, aber auch voller Humor und Empathie. Er ist ein Erfinder und nichts ist ihm zu banal oder zu kitschig, um es in Kunst zu verwandeln. Er ist ein Erfinder, ein Alles-Macher, der Sämtliches verarbeitet, was in der Kunst schon einmal da war.

Erdmann Julius Zabel studierte an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig und hat seitdem ein breites Spektrum an Kunstwerken geschaffen. Sein Werk umfasst Malerei, Keramik, Objektkunst, Fotografie, Installation und kuratorische Praktiken. Er mag keine Eindeutigkeit und seine Arbeiten sind oft voller Doppeldeutigkeit und Nonsens. Sein Werk und Person sind widersprüchlich; Zabel brennt für die Kunst und verbringt jeden Tag seines Lebens damit sein Werk noch umfangreicher zu machen. In einem rasanten Arbeitstempo bezieht er alles und jeden, den Kunstmarkt und Kunstkonsum in seine künstlerische Arbeit ein. Seine Arbeiten sind im weitesten Sinne Selbstporträts und spiegeln etwas über ihn und sein Umfeld wider. Ernsthaftigkeit, Humor, grenzüberschreitende Kreativität, große Empathie und inhaltliche Diversität sind Grundlage seiner Arbeit und seine Kunstwerke zeigen zeitgeistige Widersprüche.
Nichts ist ihm dabei zu banal oder zu kitschig. Völlig unbekümmert verwandelt er Hässliches in Schönes, Pathetisches, Gegenständliches und Intellektuelles in Kunst. Dabei nehmen Zabels komplexe Kunstwerke oft Geniekult um Maler-Heroen und Kunstkritik aufs Korn. Dialog und Kommunikation, Social Media und deren Ablehnung im Nutzen sind dabei wichtige Themen in seiner Kunst.
Der Kunstverein Magdeburg präsentiert die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Erdmann Julius Zabel, der in den USA lebt und seit kurzem auch in Bad Wonder ansässig ist. Zu sehen sind Zabels Malereien, geprägt von großzügigem Duktus und kräftigen Farben und Keramiken, die konventionell arrangiert wurden und museal pathetisch präsentiert werden. Diese Ausstellung soll eine andere Seite im vielseitigen Schaffen des Ausnahmekünstlers zeigen.
